in Upper Canada, a public meeting held annually by citizens of a township to appoint officers and decide on affairs concerning the township (discontinued in 1849 after the passing of the Municipal Act).

They appointed a Town Meeting to be held at Newark on Saturday the 17th instant, for the purpose of electing the Town and Parish Officers, as directed by the late act of this Legislature.

The inhabitants of each and every township at their annual town meeting, shall nominate, choose and appoint five commissioners, to be called commissioners of township schools, of whom three shall be a quorum.

In this way, the township councils throughout this county were first organized [Municipal Act, 1849] and the "town meeting" for choosing officers, as well as the District Council itself, came to an end.
